PRACTICAL GUIDE

The finish starts
beneath the surface.

Understand the preparation questions worth asking before painting or wallpaper installation.

Look for the cause, not only the mark

A stain, crack or loose patch may be a symptom of another issue. Explain when it appeared, whether it has changed and what repairs have already been tried. A decorative finish should not be used to conceal an unresolved leak or unsafe substrate.

Remove what cannot support the new finish

Loose material and unsuitable existing layers need assessment before new coatings or wallpaper are specified. The preparation required depends on the surface and selected product. Avoid assuming a quick sanding pass is appropriate for every wall.

Treat joints and repaired areas carefully

New gypsum board and local repairs can differ from surrounding surfaces in texture and absorbency. Joint treatment, drying, sanding and suitable priming help prepare a more consistent surface. Discuss those stages explicitly in the scope.

Check the product requirements

Paint and adhesive manufacturers provide substrate and application requirements. Material compatibility, moisture conditions and preparation matter. Agree the selected system with the team and ask what checks will be made before application.

Review the complete visible surface

A repaired or repainted patch may still stand out under strong daylight or side lighting. Ask whether a larger continuous surface should be redecorated. Confirm colour and sheen with real samples rather than relying on a screen.

Include protection in the plan

Surface preparation can create dust and debris. Discuss protection of nearby furniture, fittings and floors, and how the area will be cleaned. Tell the team about occupied rooms or sensitive equipment before the work is scheduled.
